Status of this document
This document proposes a systemic reading hypothesis. It is neither a psychometric tool, nor a therapeutic method, nor a clinical assessment instrument.
The Human Coherence Gauge does not serve to measure a person, to classify them or to make a diagnosis. It serves to represent a dynamic: the moment when the load received progressively exceeds the available capacity for integration.
The model must therefore be understood as ordinal, heuristic and transversal.
Ordinal, because it locates passages between zones, without claiming to produce an exact measurement.
Heuristic, because it helps to think, compare and identify thresholds, without replacing clinical, psychological or social analysis.
Transversal, because it relates several levels: psychic, bodily, neurobiological, relational, systemic and organisational.
A human being does not break solely because they receive too much load. They become disorganised when the gap grows too large between what they receive and what they can actually integrate.
This distinction is essential. We often speak of stress, pressure, fatigue, trauma, mental overload or psychological collapse as if they were separate phenomena. Yet behind these words lies a common principle: every human being has a limited capacity for integration. This limit varies according to personal history, the body, sleep, emotional security, social context, available resources, the quality of the bond, time for rest, the possibility of understanding what is happening and the coherence of the framework within which the person evolves.
The notion of coherence does not designate here a mental rigidity, a moral conformity or a simple personal congruence. It designates the living capacity of an individual to receive a load, to integrate it, to maintain an inner continuity and to reorganise without losing themselves.
One could also speak of a gauge of psychic integration or of a gauge of the integration threshold. But the expression “Human Coherence Gauge” retains a broader force, because it links the psyche, the body, the bond, meaning and the systemic framework.
Human coherence is therefore not a moral quality. It is not proof that a person is strong, weak, intelligent or deficient. It designates rather a dynamic state: the momentary capacity of an individual to receive a load, to process it, to relate it to their experience, to maintain an inner continuity and to adapt their behaviour without cutting themselves off from themselves.
Not losing oneself does not mean remaining identical. It means preserving a minimal continuity between what one feels, what one understands, what one chooses and what one can integrate. The invariant is not a fixed identity. It is a continuity of integration.
This idea resonates with certain works on living systems, notably autopoiesis, which insists on the continuity of organisation rather than on the immobility of a form. The living does not remain alive because it does not change. It remains alive because it maintains an organisation capable of regenerating, readjusting and preserving a functional coherence through change.
A person can receive contradictions, tensions, violent information or destabilising experiences without collapsing immediately. The living has margins of adaptation. It absorbs, compensates, reorganises, cushions. But this capacity is not infinite. When the load durably exceeds the capacity for integration, the human system no longer functions in the same way. It no longer seeks only to understand. It seeks to survive.
It is this passage that the Human Coherence Gauge seeks to represent, not as a clinical measurement, but as a reading map of integration thresholds.
The general principle
The gauge rests on a simple idea: human coherence depends on the relation between the integrative load received and the effective capacity for integration available.
As long as the person can process what they receive, contradiction remains a signal. It may disturb, tire, shift the mental framework, but it remains assimilable. It can even become constructive, because it prompts a revision of a belief, a correction of a perception or an evolution of an understanding.
When the load increases, the person enters a zone of tension. This tension is not necessarily negative. It may be the sign that an old equilibrium is no longer enough and that a transformation becomes necessary. The problem begins when this tension ceases to be integrable. At that moment, contradiction is no longer experienced as useful information. It becomes a threat.
The person no longer processes reality with the same availability. They filter, simplify, defend themselves, react faster than they understand. Nuance diminishes. The need for certainty increases. The human system passes gradually from a mode of integration to a mode of protection.
Work on allostatic load supports this reading. Allostasis designates the body's capacity to maintain stability through change. This adaptation is useful in the short term. But when it becomes repeated, prolonged or poorly recovered from, it produces a cumulative physiological and psychic cost. In other words, it is not only the load that matters, but also its duration, its repetition and the absence of real recovery.
Functional rupture appears when the critical region is crossed. It is not necessarily a spectacular collapse. It can be discreet, almost invisible. A person may continue to work, answer, smile, fulfil their obligations, while already functioning in a compensatory mode. The living sometimes holds on for a long time in appearance, while it has already reduced its perception to preserve its internal survival.
The human coherence gauge seeks precisely to make visible this passage between adaptation, tension, saturation, rupture and reorganisation.
Caution regarding clinical terms
Certain terms used in this text — such as trauma, dissociation, false self, collapse or functional rupture — should be read as descriptive markers and not as diagnostic categories.
They do not replace a clinical evaluation. They serve to name possible forms of response under excessive load: withdrawal, inner cut-off, overadaptation, hypercontrol, loss of nuance, immediate defence or reduction of the field of perception.
The gauge does not seek to say what a person “has”. It seeks to observe what happens when a human system no longer has the sufficient conditions to integrate what it receives.
The five zones of the gauge
1. Stable coherence
In this zone, the person receives information, tensions or contradictions, but can still process them.
They remain able to understand, to nuance, to decide, to sleep, to feel without being overwhelmed, to correct their mental framework and to dialogue without defending themselves automatically. Their inner system retains enough space to tell the difference between a disagreement, a real threat, an emotion, a piece of information and a projection.
Contradiction then remains a useful signal. It may indicate that an element of reality asks to be seen otherwise. It does not immediately oblige the person to flee, attack, deny or close down.
It is a zone of availability. The individual can receive the world without being entirely invaded by it.
2. Constructive tension
The load increases. There is discomfort, fatigue, doubt, questioning. The person may feel inwardly displaced, but the psychic system is still working.
This zone is often more important than it appears. It is here that many real transformations begin. An old framework becomes less obvious. A certainty cracks. A contradiction insists. Something asks to be understood otherwise.
Constructive tension is not comfortable, but it remains alive. The person can still say: this disturbs me, but I can examine it.
They do not yet need to reduce reality brutally in order to hold on. They can move through discomfort, look for meaning, accept a time of inner disorder. It is a zone of learning, of maturation, sometimes of individuation. The old framework moves, but it does not yet collapse.
The simple marker is this: faced with a contradiction, the person can still ask themselves whether something escapes them. They can still consider that they have not seen everything, that they must nuance, or that their framework must evolve. As long as this openness exists, even in discomfort, the tension remains constructive.
3. Saturation
Saturation appears when the load approaches or exceeds the available resources. It may come from a sudden shock, but more often it comes from a silent accumulation over time, when the load never really drops below the capacity for recovery.
This is an essential point. A short tension can be traversed if it is followed by a real time of integration. A moderate load, but repeated over weeks, months or years, can produce a deeper saturation than an intense but isolated event. The human system does not become disorganised only through excess of intensity. It also becomes disorganised through absence of recovery.
Work on chronic stress and prefrontal functions gives cautious support to this zone. Under heavy load, especially when it becomes chronic or is experienced as uncontrollable, the resources involved in cognitive flexibility, working memory, inhibition and emotional regulation may become less available. Responses of protection, vigilance and defence may then take up more space.
At this stage, the person no longer really processes information. They begin to filter in order to survive.
The signs can be numerous: reactivity, confusion, need for certainty, abrupt rejection, cognitive fatigue, irritability, rigidity, loss of nuance, rumination, a feeling of being invaded, difficulty prioritising what is important and what is not.
In this zone, contradiction ceases to be a signal. It becomes a threat.
The person is not necessarily in bad faith. They are not necessarily incapable of understanding. They may simply no longer have enough inner space to integrate what is happening. The system then reduces complexity. It looks for a simple explanation, a target, an exit, a backup structure.
The marker then becomes different: faced with a contradiction, the first reaction is no longer examination, but defence. The person no longer spontaneously considers that they could be wrong, that an element escapes them or that their framework might need to evolve. They look first for what threatens them, what proves them wrong, or what seems to stand against them.
This tipping point is important. Saturation does not begin only when the person becomes confused or exhausted. It also begins when contradiction no longer opens a space of reflection, but triggers an immediate protection of the inner framework.
Saturation is a critical zone because it can be misread from the outside. One may believe that the person refuses to understand, when they perhaps no longer have the conditions needed to integrate. One may believe that they are exaggerating, when their internal system is already on the edge of a threshold.
4. Functional rupture
Functional rupture appears when the critical region of integration is exceeded. The human system can no longer absorb what it receives without becoming disorganised.
At this stage, the individual no longer seeks truth as a priority. They seek a way out.
This way out can take several forms: denial, flight, aggressiveness, collapse, inner cut-off, overadaptation, false self, submission to the dominant framework, emotional automatism, ideological closure, need for control or the disappearance of the capacity to position oneself freely.
The word rupture does not necessarily mean the disappearance of all function. A person may remain standing, speaking, working, producing, caring for others, while having lost part of their internal coherence. They function, but at the cost of a cut-off. They hold on, but by separating themselves from a part of what they feel, think or know.
Functional rupture can take two main forms.
The first is rupture by collapse. It manifests through exhaustion, withdrawal, loss of impetus, freezing, the inability to act or to project oneself. The human system can no longer maintain the effort of integration. It withdraws, cuts off, slows down or partly shuts down to preserve what can still be preserved.
The second is rupture by overcompensation. It is often less visible, because it can resemble strength, mastery or performance. It can take the form of hypercontrol, perfectionism, compulsive work, rigid militancy, flight into activity, ideological posturing, the false self or excessive adaptation to external expectations.
This distinction echoes, cautiously, certain clinical models of regulation such as the window of tolerance. Within a bearable zone of activation, the individual can feel, think and integrate. When activation exceeds this zone, two directions become possible: hyperactivation, where the system forces, struggles, controls or attacks; and hypoactivation, where the system withdraws, freezes or collapses.
In both cases, the threshold is exceeded. The difference lies in the direction of the response. In collapse, the system lets go. In overcompensation, it forces. But in both cases, the individual no longer functions from a living integration. They function from a survival strategy.
This is why one must distinguish external performance from real human coherence. An individual can be socially effective and inwardly fragmented. They can give the impression of being adapted when they are in reality overadapted. They can continue to obey an incoherent framework because contesting that framework would cost them too much psychically, socially or materially.
Functional rupture is therefore not a judgement. It is the sign that a critical region has been crossed.
5. Reorganisation
After the rupture, the human system does not remain immobile. It attempts to reorganise.
Three main directions are possible.
The first is defensive closure. The person hardens their beliefs, reduces their perception, looks for someone to blame, clings to a simplified framework. This closure can give an impression of stability, but it is often a defensive stability. The system has recovered a form, but at the cost of a reduction of reality.
The second is reduced adaptation. The person becomes functional again, but with less inner margin, less confidence, less availability or a diminished capacity for integration. They can hold on, but within a more restricted perimeter.
The third is new integration. The person understands what saturated them, adjusts their limits, rebuilds a more coherent framework, distinguishes what comes from themselves and what comes from the system, transforms experience into understanding.
It is here that the coherence of the living becomes central. Rupture is not only a failure. It can be a regime transition. An old mode of functioning can no longer continue, but another can emerge if the conditions for integration exist.
Reorganisation then depends on time, security, language, support, lucidity and the possibility of relating what has been lived to a structure of meaning.
Synthesis of the five zones

Micro-scenarios to understand the zones
In stable coherence, a person receives a criticism at work. They may be affected, but they remain able to listen, to sort out what is fair, to respond without defending themselves immediately, and to sleep well that evening.
In constructive tension, the same criticism comes back several times. It disturbs more. The person doubts, questions themselves, feels discomfort, but can still examine what is recurring and adjust the way they function.
In saturation, the criticism no longer produces analysis. It first triggers a defence. The person ruminates, sleeps less well, anticipates attacks, loses nuance and begins to interpret every remark as a threat.
In functional rupture, two directions become possible. Either the person collapses: withdrawal, loss of impetus, inability to project themselves. Or they overcompensate: hypercontrol, perfectionism, excessive work, rigidity. In both cases, they no longer function from an available integration, but from a survival strategy.
In reorganisation, the person may close down, reduce their field of perception and avoid any questioning. They may also progressively recover margins, understand what saturated them, adjust their framework and rebuild a more living coherence.
The temporality of saturation
The gauge must be read across time.
Saturation is often cumulative: it comes not only from an intense event, but from a load that repeats itself without sufficient recovery.
Rupture is often non-linear: the system may seem to hold on for a long time, then tip rapidly once the critical region is crossed.
Reorganisation is often asymmetric: lowering the load is not always enough to restore the capacity for integration. The conditions of security, rest, meaning, bond and margin for action must be rebuilt.
This is why the gauge does not describe a simple rise and fall of pressure. It describes a dynamic of threshold, accumulation, tipping and reconstruction.
The return path is not the outward path
A human coherence gauge must not be thought of as a simple needle that goes up and comes back down. The living does not always return to its initial state when the load diminishes.
After a saturation or a functional rupture, the human system can remain marked by what it had to go through. Sleep can return without confidence returning. External pressure can diminish without the body immediately ceasing to be on alert. The situation can improve without the capacity for integration being restored.
This phenomenon echoes the logic of critical transitions and of hysteresis in complex systems: a system can change regime when it crosses a critical region, and the return path is not necessarily symmetric to the entry path.
In living systems, a regime transition can leave a trace. It is not always enough to remove the load that caused the rupture. One must sometimes rebuild the conditions for integration: security, time, support, language, margin for action, recognition of what has been gone through and the possibility of reorganising the framework.
This is why the zone of reorganisation is not a simple return to normal. It can lead to a defensive closure, to a reduced adaptation or to a new integration.
Spotting the passage from one zone to another
The gauge must not only describe states. It must help to spot the passages. The threshold does not always appear abruptly. It often shows itself through small changes: nuance diminishes, the body recovers less well, sleep becomes less restorative, contradiction tires more than it enlightens, the need to be right gradually replaces the capacity to question oneself.
Work on critical transitions speaks of early-warning indicators when a system begins to lose its capacity to return before tipping. Without mechanically transposing these models to the human psyche, this idea supports the interest of spotting the first signs of saturation before the rupture.
A simple question allows one to distinguish constructive tension from saturation:
Faced with a contradiction, can I still tell myself that something escapes me, or do I immediately feel the need to defend myself?
As long as contradiction opens a space of reflection, the tension remains integrable. When it first triggers a defensive reaction, the human system is approaching saturation.
Another question is just as important:
After a tension, do I still really recover?
If sleep, rest, solitude or exchange allow a return to a clearer state, the capacity for integration remains active. If the load stays present despite rest, if the body continues to carry the tension, if thought goes round in circles, then saturation is beginning to settle in.
A third marker concerns the relation to reality:
Am I still trying to understand, or am I mainly trying to reduce what disturbs me?
When the individual is still trying to understand, even with difficulty, coherence remains available. When they first try to make discomfort disappear, to eliminate contradiction or to find someone to blame, the system has already entered a defensive logic.
These questions do not serve to judge oneself. They serve to locate the threshold.
A conceptual ratio rather than an exact measurement
The gauge does not claim to measure the human being as one measures a temperature, a speed or a mass. It proposes a conceptual ratio, intended to represent a dynamic of integration.
The principle can be summarised thus:

Sₕ(t) designates an ordinal index of human saturation at time t.
Dᴄ(t) designates the dose of integrative load, that is, the set of loads weighing on the capacity for integration.
Cₑ(t) designates the effective capacity for integration, that is, the set of resources that allow the human system to absorb, process and reorganise what it receives.
This formula must not be read as a score computable without a validated protocol. It does not possess, as it stands, a standardised unit, an empirical weighting, or a universal numerical threshold. It serves to make a relation legible: the more the load increases, the more the capacity for integration must be supported; the more the capacity for integration diminishes, the more a previously bearable load can become saturating.
One must therefore not imagine a fixed threshold, of the type Sₕ(t) = 1. The integration threshold should rather be thought of as a critical region, varying according to persons, histories, bodies, resources and contexts.
When the dose of load remains below the effective capacity for integration, the person can still process what they receive.
When the dose increases durably or when the capacity for integration diminishes, the human system enters a zone of tension.
When the load remains high without sufficient recovery, a critical region appears. The person does not necessarily tip over all at once. They progressively lose nuance, recover less well, defend themselves faster, reduce their field of perception and seek more to protect themselves than to understand.
Relating the observed dimensions to the model
To avoid reducing the gauge to an abstract formula, one must relate the observed dimensions to the two great variables of the model.
The dose of integrative load, Dᴄ(t), gathers what weighs on the capacity for integration.
It includes informational load: volume of information, speed, contradiction, instability, complexity.
It includes emotional load: fear, shame, anger, guilt, insecurity, wounded attachment, the feeling of being threatened.
It includes bodily load: fatigue, lack of sleep, chronic stress, nervous tension, pain, exhaustion, general physiological state.
It includes sensory-nervous load: continuous exposure to screens, notifications, noise, artificial light, rapid solicitations, permanent interruptions and environments saturated with signals.
This sensory-nervous load is often underestimated, because it seems mundane. Yet it can exhaust the nervous system without passing through a visible crisis. The body receives too much stimulation, too fast, too often. The person does not always feel in danger, but their organism remains on alert. In the long term, this overexposure reduces the capacity for integration available for the rest: emotions, conflicts, decisions, contradictions, work, relationships, adaptation.
This point can be related to the theory of cognitive load, which highlights the limits of working memory and the effect of overload on the processing of information. It can also be related to contemporary research on digital interruptions, notifications and attention capture.
It also includes external pressure: domination, contradictory injunctions, absence of room for manoeuvre, economic dependence, social pressure, fear of losing one's place or institutional constraint.
It finally includes internal dissonance: the gap between what the person feels, thinks, says and does. The more this gap increases, the more internal coherence becomes costly to maintain.
The effective capacity for integration, Cₑ(t), gathers what allows the human system to absorb, process and reorganise what it receives.
It includes the resources of integration: time, silence, chosen solitude, trust, language, the quality of the bond, the possibility of thinking without being immediately corrected, humiliated or forced.
It includes real recovery: restorative sleep, effective rest, a real drop in load, the return of the body to calm, the possibility of not staying in permanent vigilance.
It includes available support: relational, organisational or symbolic support, recognition of what is lived, the presence of a sufficiently reliable framework.
It includes the capacity for reorganisation: the ability to modify one's framework without collapsing, to acknowledge an error without losing all identity, to move through inner disorder without having to close oneself off from reality.
These dimensions show that the human threshold is never solely mental. It is also bodily, sensory, nervous, relational, symbolic and systemic.
Early-warning indicators and the risk of circularity
The model would be circular if one simply said: there is saturation because there is rupture, and there is rupture because there is saturation.
To avoid this circularity, the gauge must rely on early-warning indicators. These indicators do not serve only to describe after the fact. They allow one to observe saturation before it becomes functional rupture.
The loss of recovery is an early-warning indicator. A person sleeps, rests or isolates themselves, but no longer really returns to a clear state.
The loss of nuance is an early-warning indicator. Contradictions no longer produce reflection, but a reaction of defence.
Rumination is an early-warning indicator. The system turns around the same load without managing to integrate it.
The body remaining on alert is an early-warning indicator. The situation has passed, but the tension remains.
The closure of the framework is an early-warning indicator. The person no longer seeks only to understand. They first seek not to be affected any more.
These elements make the gauge operative. It does not serve only to name a rupture once it has already occurred. It serves to spot a drift before the tipping point.
Markers for self-observation
These markers do not produce a score. They do not serve to classify oneself, nor to diagnose oneself. They only allow one to sense in which direction the inner system is moving.
Faced with a contradiction, can I still ask myself whether something escapes me?
After a tension, do my sleep, my rest or my silence still allow me to recover?
Am I still trying to understand, or am I mainly trying to protect myself?
Does my body return to calm, or does it continue to carry the load?
Can I adjust my framework, or must I close myself off to hold on?
These questions do not require a perfect answer. They serve to spot a movement. When openness, recovery and nuance remain possible, the tension can still be constructive. When defence, persistent fatigue and closure become dominant, saturation is probably beginning to settle in.
Induced saturation and integration vulnerability
The gauge must not serve to attribute the cause of a rupture too quickly. It does not mechanically decide between personal fragility and the pressure of the framework.
It rather allows one to see which side of the relation is driving the saturation.
When Dᴄ(t) increases strongly, saturation comes mainly from the imposed load: incoherent environment, repeated contradictions, violence, external pressure, informational overload, sensory exhaustion, absence of margin.
When Cₑ(t) decreases strongly, saturation comes mainly from a weakened capacity for integration: chronic fatigue, lack of sleep, isolation, reactivated trauma, absence of support, loss of language, a body already on alert.
In most human situations, the two dimensions interact. A framework that is too heavy diminishes the resources of integration. Weakened resources make the same load harder to absorb. The gauge therefore does not look for a single culprit. It seeks to understand the dynamic relation between load and capacity.
What the gauge must not become
A human coherence gauge must not be used as a tool to classify individuals. It must not become an instrument of diagnosis, control or judgement.
It does not say: this person is worth less than another.
It says: at this precise moment, in this precise context, with this history, this body, these resources and this load, the capacity for integration is more or less available.
This is a fundamental difference.
A very lucid individual can saturate if they receive too many contradictions, too much violence, too many impossible injunctions or too much load without space for integration. Conversely, an apparently calm person may simply have reduced their field of perception so as to no longer feel what disturbs them.
The gauge must therefore remain a tool of reading, not a tool of domination. It serves to better understand human thresholds, not to lock someone into a label.
Ethical limit
The Human Coherence Gauge must not become an instrument for sorting, controlling or evaluating individuals.
It must not be used by an organisation to classify its employees, measure their “solidity”, justify additional pressure or shift onto them the responsibility for a saturating framework.
Its legitimate use is the opposite: to make integration thresholds visible, to spot signals of saturation, to question the load imposed by a context, to preserve margins of recovery and to support the conditions for a living coherence.
An organisation that used this gauge to evaluate people instead of evaluating the load it imposes on them would distort its meaning.
Why this gauge is necessary
The preceding model belongs first to an individual and systemic reading. It describes how a human being can pass from an available integration to saturation, then to rupture or reorganisation.
From there, a social reading becomes possible, but it must be distinguished from the model itself.
Modern societies talk a great deal about performance, resilience and adaptation. They ask individuals to hold on, to absorb, to understand quickly, to adjust constantly, to remain functional in environments that are sometimes profoundly incoherent.
But they rarely measure the real cost of this adaptation.
An individual may be required to stay calm in an unjust framework. To stay rational in the face of contradictory injunctions. To stay productive despite exhaustion. To stay loyal to a structure that disorganises their own relation to reality. To stay adapted to a world that no longer is.
The human coherence gauge then allows one to shift the gaze. It does not ask only why this person does not hold on. It asks what load is imposed on them, with what resources, in what framework, and for how long.
This shift changes everything.
It allows one to understand that certain human reactions are not isolated anomalies, but responses to saturating environments. It also allows one to distinguish real fragility from induced saturation. A person is not always fragile because they break. They may break because the framework imposes on them an incoherent load beyond their available resources.
The link with the coherence of the living
In the coherence of the living, a system is defined not only by its capacity to remain stable. It is defined by its capacity to maintain a functional continuity despite tensions, variations and perturbations.
Stability is not always a sign of health. A system may appear stable because it blocks, controls, represses or compensates. Conversely, a phase of instability may be necessary if it allows a fairer reorganisation.
The human coherence gauge takes up this principle at the psychic level.
The human being must not be understood as a machine that should function in a constant manner. They are a living system, traversed by loads, memories, affects, contradictions, bonds, losses, pressures and possibilities of transformation.
When they receive an assimilable load, they can evolve. When they receive an excessive load, they protect themselves. When they receive an incoherent load in a durable way, they may fragment. When they recover conditions for integration, they can reorganise.
The gauge therefore does not measure a fixed identity. It represents a state of passage.
An opening toward organisational coherence
This gauge can also serve as a starting point for thinking an organisational coherence, on condition that one does not confuse an individual and an organisation.
An organisation does not have a psyche in the human sense. But it possesses a collective capacity for integration: to absorb perturbations, to maintain its essential functions, to preserve a shared meaning, to learn from its errors and to reorganise without fragmenting.
Organisational resilience therefore does not consist only in holding on despite shocks. It consists in maintaining a functional continuity while remaining capable of adaptation. An organisation can saturate when it durably imposes more load than its structures, its teams and its members can integrate.
The signs are then recognisable: procedural rigidity, official communication disconnected from real experience, the multiplication of controls, loss of nuance in decision-making, disengagement, rumours, silos, presenteeism, turnover, the inability to learn from errors.
As for the individual, organisational rupture can take two forms: collapse, when the essential functions become paralysed; or overcompensation, when the organisation responds to its own saturation with more control, more procedures, more indicators and less real listening.
This transposition must remain a systemic analogy. It does not replace the concrete analysis of an organisation. But it opens a path: a truly resilient organisation is not one that holds on at all costs. It is one that recognises its integration thresholds, preserves margins, supports its members and transforms crises without losing its functional continuity.

But this trajectory is not a straight line.
If the load diminishes early enough and recovery is real, the tension can become constructive again.
If the load persists without recovery, saturation settles in.
If the critical region is crossed, rupture can appear in the form of collapse or overcompensation.
After the rupture, reorganisation does not automatically bring back the initial state. It can produce a defensive closure, a reduced adaptation or a new integration.

It is not the load alone that breaks a human being. It is the gap between the load received and the available capacity for integration.
Visually, the gauge can be represented as a dial with five zones, but this dial must not be understood as a simple needle that goes up and down. It must rather represent a dynamic of transition.
This phrase is important because it avoids two errors.
The first would be to believe that it is enough to reduce all tension in order to protect the human being. This is not exact. Certain tensions are necessary for transformation.
The second would be to believe that the human being should be able to bear everything if they are sufficiently strong. This is also false. Every living capacity has a threshold.
The gauge shows the space between these two errors.
A possible minimal support
To make this gauge usable, the minimal support could be a double-sided card.
On the front: the title, the subtitle, the central phrase and the five zones.
On the back: the simplified index Sₕ(t) = Dᴄ(t) / Cₑ(t), the markers for self-observation and the phrase of caution:
This gauge does not serve to make a diagnosis. It serves to spot an integration threshold.
A more developed booklet could then take up the same elements, illustrating them with concrete cases: burnout, professional overadaptation, cognitive rigidity, militant saturation, reactivated old trauma, relational exhaustion, loss of meaning within an incoherent framework.
The card gives the core. The booklet gives the explanation.
Conclusion
The Human Coherence Gauge proposes a simple reading of a complex phenomenon: the human being holds on as long as the load received remains integrable. When this load exceeds the available resources, they no longer merely think, understand or choose. They compensate.
This model allows one to look differently at fatigue, rigidity, aggressiveness, flight, overadaptation or collapse. These reactions are not always individual defects. They may signal an overshoot of the critical region of integration.
Human coherence is not a posture. It is a living capacity, situated, variable, dependent on the body, the bond, time, meaning and the framework.
A society that ignores these thresholds produces individuals who are functional in appearance, but increasingly saturated inwardly. A society that understands them can begin to distinguish useful effort from destructive overload, fertile tension from systemic violence, living adaptation from imposed compensation.
Coherence does not consist in bearing everything. It consists in being able to integrate without losing oneself.
