What the framework claims

The architecture of a system alters the trajectories still available to it. In other words: what a system can still become depends not only on its present state, but on the way its history has become inscribed in it.

Scope statement. ORI-C is neither a unified theory, nor an ontology, nor a universal equation. It is a grammar: a set of distinctions that makes comparable situations which their respective disciplines describe separately. This page presents the framework. It presents neither the tests nor the results, which belong to the Research page.

1. The starting question

Any physical system, a planet, a cell, an institution, occupies a certain state at each moment. The sciences describe that state and its governing laws very well. They describe far less well something quite ordinary: two systems in the same state today whose futures diverge because they did not arrive there by the same route.

This is usually called path dependence, and the term covers two very different phenomena that the framework is careful never to conflate. In the first, the historical difference fades on its own once the system is held under constant constraint: it was only a relaxation delay. In the second, something of the past remains materially present in the system and continues to bear on its later responses.

Only the second case concerns ORI-C. It supposes that a history does not merely pass: that it leaves a trace, and that this trace makes a measurable difference to what remains possible.

2. Three things not to conflate

The framework rests on an elementary distinction, and nearly all of its rigour comes from there. Three things coexist in a system and are ordinarily merged under the word "state".

The state. What the system is now, regardless of how it got there. The temperature of a room, the composition of a sample, the position of a planet.

The inscribed trace. What its history has left in it, materially, and which cannot be deduced from its state alone. The remanence of a magnet, the dislocations of cold-worked metal, the lineages of a population.

The architecture. How its components are connected, what depends on what, which paths exist and which are closed. Neither a state nor a trace: an organisation.

The distinction is not scholastic. It decides what has to be measured. Claiming that a history has effects and then observing only states is to speak of one thing and measure another. And intervening on a system's state, which is easy, is never the same as intervening on its trace, which is hard and alone conclusive.

3. The chain

The framework arranges these terms in a sequence. It is not a law: it is the order in which the questions must be asked, and in which the measurements must be taken.

History → Architecture → Constraints → Response → Inscription → Possibilities

A history produces an architecture. That architecture imposes constraints, closing some paths and opening others. Under those constraints, the system responds to what happens to it. That response is inscribed, or it is not. And depending on whether it is, the range of what remains accessible to the system shifts.

The final term is the one that matters. What the framework seeks to measure is not a particular future state, but a narrowing or widening of the possible. An organisation that persists is not one that resists change: it is one that retains enough possibilities to keep changing.

Every arrow in this chain is a place where one can go wrong, and each demands its own demonstration. Linking history to response while skipping the trace establishes a correlation, not a mechanism.

4. Inscription versus delay

The criterion is demanding, deliberately so. To claim that a history is inscribed, three things must be established separately.

First, the trace must be measurable in its own right, independently of the response one wishes to attribute to it. A trace known only through its supposed effects is not a trace: it is a hypothesis.

Second, it must be possible to act on it. Erasing the magnetic memory of a sample, annealing a metal, resetting a lineage's trace. This ablation is what separates a real inscription from a coincidence, because it produces a physical control rather than a statistical permutation.

Third, the observed response must be future with respect to the intervention, and must beat a control of comparable complexity. A richer model always predicts better; not because it contains history, but because it contains more parameters.

A system that returns of its own accord to its earlier behaviour under constant constraint has not inscribed its history. It has delayed it. This distinction is the framework's principal safeguard, and it has already been used to withdraw results the programme believed it had.

5. Three domains, deliberately kept apart

The framework is applied to three domains: matter and its successive architectures, the Solar System and its orbital history, the living and its lineages. A common base supplies the vocabulary, the rules governing typed links and the levels of evidence.

These domains do not merge their results, and the separation is methodological before it is organisational. They share neither objects, nor methods, nor levels of validation. A result obtained on biological lineages says nothing about an orbital architecture, and a result obtained in a reduced model does not become empirical because another domain has real data.

This is the framework's most costly constraint, and its most useful. It forbids the effect of generality that would make the work seductive and unverifiable.

6. What the framework does not claim

It does not claim that every system has a memory. Most do not, and the framework serves as much to establish that absence as to establish its presence.

It does not claim to supply a mechanism shared by the domains it compares. It supplies a grammar of description, which is far less and far more useful.

It does not claim that a negative result condemns a hypothesis beyond the protocol that produced it, nor that a positive result extends beyond the dataset that yielded it.

Finally, it claims no direction. Nothing in the framework supposes that a system tends towards greater organisation, nor that persistence is progress. An organisation that locks itself in also persists, by losing its possibilities.

7. Where to verify

The framework is backed by a separate scientific record, kept apart from this site, holding the protocols, data, scripts and verdicts, positive and negative alike. This page reproduces none of its figures: it sets out what the framework claims, not what has been established.
